sucker

Sucker...that's what I am. I love JT's Sexy Back. It's old and
overplayed but damn it.

DFW/ORD

Last Thursday, Ohare shut down because of the storm. Last night, my friend CWG got to spend another Thursday night in Chicago and ergo with me because of bad weather in Dallas. I'm sure it sucks because sometimes all you want to do is go home and sleep in your bed (and your husband if you have a good one). But last night, she got a really good Chi-Town experience. We met some of my friends for drinks and food at Bordo's. Took note of the backwards caps and stupid sports jerseys. Next stop: Wicker Park. Talk about a total change - skinny jeans on men with eyeliner and ugly uber trendy threads on girl. Rodans - it's a pretty cool bar. How could we not end up at the Weiner Circle for a char polish? The abuse the ladies were dishing out was pretty tame. No chocolate milkshakes. There was a girl who asked me if they took credit card...I looked at her and said: You don't want to give them your credit card. One of the girls told her that if her parents could afford her private school education...I think the Weiner Circle Girl was from the same city as Credit Card Girl...then they could afford to pay for a wax job on her stache. Damn...she left with her friend after she paid for her food in cash.

*Jim we're so going to the Weiner Circle when you come up!

I forgot to include...CWG and I got up at 5:40AM and had coffee/breakfast at Intelligentsia. That's Chicago.

Chi Town Storm

I took this last Friday, the day after the huge storm that hit the area. This is on Arlington between Orchard and Clark. There was another huge branch torn off a tree on Orchard and Fullerton. My first time back on the running path along the lake, I saw 2 old old huge trees uprooted. Another one looked like it was struck by lightening. Crazy storm. Ohare actually announced that it was closed...and to get the fuck out. My friend CWS had to stay with me because her flight back to Dallas was nonexistant.

DENIED!

I asked the older fellow sitting at the table next to me just now if
he could keep an eye on my laptop while I run into the bathroom...it's
unlikely that someone would run off with this sucker, plugged into the
wall and all...although this is the SBUX I saw a guy get arrested for
stealing the tip jar. But very unlikely.

He basically fucking said NO?! He said that he'd watch my stuff but
would no way chase after the person who'd steal my laptop...he'd give
me a description though...WOW.

Hmm...if he fell over, I would first look for gloves before beginning
compressions.

Conflagration

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/28/world/europe/28greece.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

I didn't really realize how bad the fires were or are in Greece. It
seems outrageous that so many people died from this. Ok, so the fires
in California are bad but you only hear of property damage not people
dying as the flee the fire. Very tragic.

This made me start to wonder when the Greeks started to look at their
mythology as mythology...

12 Miler

I love running in the rain and snow but I loathe the wet shoes part. I woke up at 5:30AM ready to run but not prepared for the rain falling. For that reason, I skipped out meeting for a group run. Screw that. To illustrate how serious I was about running anyway and on my own, I fell back asleep in my running skirt and my Asics on the ottoman. I got up at 8, ate a Luna bar and hit the ground running right outside my building at 8:29AM. It never rained again. And the breeze and overcast sky made it less scary to run for 2 hours straight on you own. At 10:29AM, it was done and I was happy.

Wrigleyville Lunch

The Michael Vick's dogfighting case was a brief topic of conversation at lunch today. I love dogs and ethical treatment, but WTF. Maybe drugs and rape accusations and drunk driving aren't as big of social mores than I thought.

Flame on, I'm gone, I'm so sweet like a nice BonBon

Looks like I'm finally going to see my Boys before the become Beastie Men and break-up. Last Friday morning, my only motivator to get up and out early even though I was suffering from a combination of a mild hang-over and food poisoning, were the Beastie Boys. I got pre-sale tickets to see them at the Riviera Theatre off Laurence and Broadway, Sept 26th. I am totally looking forward to this. I've tried to make sure that I don't work the day of and the day after the show.

From the blurb I saw in the Red Eye while walk/reading, it looks as though I may get money back for Amy Winehouse...he daddy wants her to go to Rehab. And now that I'm leaving for Austin earlier than expected for Austin City Limits Festival, I'm also giving up to see hometown boys, Wilco, at a show in Millenium Park with some friends. Ok, so I'm going to see Wilco at ACL Fest and it was a little excessive paying to see them twice in the same week. I wanted to see them with in Chicago with my friends.

Air and Water Show

This weekend is the Air and Water Show down by North Avenue Beach. The planes turn around over Lincoln Park, Lakeview and even over Wrigley Field. It's so loud. I actually covered my ears like a small child as a plane flew over. A series of car alarms were set off on Clark during this time.

It's kinda sad that the summer is ending soon. This means that the Chicago Marathon is coming up very soon. It's not like I wasted any of the summer. I've been to the beach several times, sat outside the majority of my meals out. Awww...it's almost over!

I've been bad with running because of my shin problem (um, major pain) and because of the weather. I'm so NOT a morning runner. I seriously dread the Sat morning group run. I am more motivated and energetic in the evening...anyway.

Slick shoes??? Are you crazy?

I don't know how women can continue to wear heels they can barely walk from the door at Starbucks to the counter. How much harder is it carrying a freakin Grande Frappacino? I am sure that some people's feet have arches that are just made to walk in 3-inch heels all day long...I am not one of those. Every once in while I find a shoe with 2 inch heels that I can walk all over Chicago in. Kitten heels are friendly to my feet too...except when it snows. But that's any shoe not made of tires. Last week, I blew $350 on a pair of custom orthotics just for the marathon...and for my plans to run for the rest of my life. The PT was like, you have a callous here because you have collapsed metatarsels...Well, shit. I thought the callous was there becuase I have disgusting feet. Didn't think about the fact that my body compensates for my biomechanics. Hope it was a good investment.

I've come to terms with 3 inch heels and pain. Sometimes there best as "sitting shoes." I got a great deal on a pair of Joan and David 3 inch wedges with leather straps. Funny but there is the word cannoting comfort etched in the bottom...Au contraire...there's nothing comfortable after walking a block. So I now carry a pair of Havaianas or Rainbows in my purse. I switch shoes in the cab and switch back to comfort shoes on the way to the cab home.

Variety

Sometimes too much variety is not a good thing. I've heard from someone who heard from Oprah (uhhh...whatever...I can't stand her...you're not always right ya know!) that a restaurant with that offers too many things on their menu isn't really that good. Scratch that.... Places that offer too much aren't focused and overlook something like quality or taste...which is one of the thing you consider when eating. (Except for the 2 AM bites at La Bamba or Wiener Circle...anything with salt is good at that time. And I also have to exclude breakfasts...omelets are good at most places.) Anyway...Look at diners...just add grease and butter to everything on the menu and it's "good" at the time but you want to die later. You get filled up with rolls and butter, fries, and you get a half-assed main course. There's the chinese place on Briar and Broadway or any other chinese place for that matter...there's way to many things to choose from...I get kinda frustrated deciding what freakin dish I want...they all sound good but everything sounds the same. Choosing what you want shouldn't require you to look at more than 4 pages...the first page being the restaurant name and cheesy pencil rendering of the facade.

This was a topic of conversation at dinner with the Ryan Sisters. We ate dinner Jerry's Sandwiches on Division. There were seriously 100 sandwiches to choose from. It's subdivided into what meat you want in it...then it gets confusing as hell from there. After taking forever to decide and then an eternity to place an order, I got a really awesome sandwich. Don't remember the name but it had prosciutto, saprosatta, fried eggplant, provolone and bell peppers...delicious. You get 2 sides...the corn bread, dill potato salad were good but the fries and the mac and cheese were sub-par.

The sidewalk patio area is really nice. A lot bigger than the ones you have in Lincoln Park and Lakeview. The downer was the new manure laid out not far from out table. Without the wind made by passing cars, it was no big deal. I have to say that the waitress wasn't great...and I can say this because we paid the bill in cash. We gave her a $20 to get change. She only brought back a $10 bill. Just so she wouldn't think that we ripped her off...3 yuppies, I went inside to give her our money, the bill and the message that she kept our $10. She was like, "are you sure you gave me a $20 and not $10?" and "really?" as she dug around in her pocket. Seriously, if we were even the types to rip off a restaurant, you think one of us would go inside?

So what does this mean? Guys won't ask me out again because I ordered
an appetizer for dinner? Sometimes the starter has more calories than
the main course. And sometimes you're already full from the food they
bring you before your main course comes in.

Gotta Love Texas!

Obama for America

Yesterday E and I volunteered at the Obama HQ. On our way there, we were hoping we didn't have to sit on the phone. When we got there, we were handed phone lists. HA! It was ok. That was my do-gooder deed of the day.

We had to call people out-of-state based on their congressional district and who have already expressed an interest in getting Obama's name on the ballot for the Primaries. It was nice to hear people enthusiastic about doing their part.

Shubas

I slept really well last night. You know why? I had a really good head start at Shubas last night. Not that the performances were bad. Wesley Jenson and Eisley put on a good show. In any case, being in a dark, warm room with live acoustic music...I was primed.

pencil

BERLIN - A woman who had a pencil lodged in her head for 55 years after a childhood accident has finally had most of it removed

Well shit!  Ok, so she lived. But how the hell did it just stay up there.  Through her cheek to her brain as a 4 year old?  No infection so she must be immunologically strong.  She should be use as a warning to kids in kindergarten.

sanrio surprise

I would be a baaaad cop if I got to wear Hello Kitty at work?!  I kinda wish I could have sat in the meeting that decided the fate of cops showing bad behavior.

Actually, I CAN wear Hello Kitty if I wanted to, but I don't.  Maybe I should.

safety first

SYDNEY - More than two-thirds of Australians living outside major cities are overweight or obese, and extremely obese corpses are creating a safety hazard at mortuaries

Ummm...

Just realized...the other day when I Googled Angel by Massive Attack, I searched for "Massive Attack West Wing."  Wow, I look like a terrorist.  My bad.

Affordable Portables

I just walked by AP on Clark...they're loading wooden furniture into trucks...A dresser got a little scratched up...they've got the Orange Glow or whatever wood spray to cover up the scratches. Awesome. It's like the Market Place on Diversey...the produce guy isn't hiding the fact that he's removing wilted leaves and stuff from the produce.

Angel off Mezzanine

I'm listening to Massive Attack's Angel. I realized where I've heard it before...West Wing when Zoe gets kidnapped.

Regarding the Lakeview/Lincoln Park Attacks

Neighborhood associations are also calling for increased vigilance in the wake of the attacks. Tunney and Ald. Vi Daley (43rd) are holding two safety seminars for area residents 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Oz Park, near Lincoln Park High School at 2001 N. Orchard St., and the following Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Sheil Park, 3505 N. Southport Ave.

Police will give residents tips on protecting themselves, and free pepper spray will be offered.

Whys of Mating

Really interesting.  I took Evolutionary Psychology from David Buss at UT.  One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken.  My roommate in college took a class on sex from Cindy Meston.  Meston apparently used her grant money to purchase porn for research.  I think she's one of the few researchers on female sex dysfunction.
