Big Ike

Check out this house in far north Houston.  This happened during Ike.  Right into a bedroom.  The roots were ripped from the ground.  Good thing the house is on the market so no one got hurt.  Kinda hurts the re-sale value.

Mr. Cao

VSA should be proud...even if he's a Republican. I Wikipediaed him...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Cao
He went to JV for high school. Go Northwest Side! Go Houston!

Rod, you asshole.

Rod! Who do you think you are?
You're in Springfield. Small potatoes. You're not in Chicago. Mashed potatoes made with fresh cream & organic chives.
If you're going to be corrupt, do it for the better good. Mayor Daley makes this city work with the corruption. We benefit from it. You're just plain greedy. You asshole. Keep your dirty greedy hands off Obama.

Patrick Fitzgerald, you the MAN!

FedEx, you ass clowns

FexEx...you are on my shit list. Where's my freakin MacBook??? You said it would be delivered today. And NOW it says on Nov 28th??? THAT IS BULLSHIT.

CDW - I'm sure you have something to do with this. The damn rep (JB) didn't even send me a copy of the invoice like she said she would. I had to email her 24 hours later to get this. AND I had to ask for the FedEx tracking number. What the fuck.

My MacBook

http://www.apple.com/macbook/

I don't know how to describe how I'm feeling while waiting for my MacBook to arrive by FedEx today. I'm staying home all day so I won't miss the delivery. The tracking site is constantly being refreshed...it's not telling me shit! It's a cold day in Chicago and I have my window open so I can hear the truck pull up.

I'm psycho, I know.

I want it.
I can't wait.

I love my iBook G4 but it's noticeably slower...takes longer to shut down, can't have all my Safari window tabs open with Word, Powerpoint, and iTunes with the same speed as 3 years ago. It's been absolutely reliable and compact enough to fit my various hobo bags and definitely my TimBuk2 bag.

An evening with Smashing Pumpkins

This is a picture of the in side of the Auditorium Theatre...beautiful.

I love the Pumpkins.  I've seen them 3 times in Texas back in the mid and late 90s.  That's when they were good.  That's before Billy Corgan became such a rockstar, drama queen.  He's a genius musically.  But there's something to be said when 2 of your former band mates did not return when the band was "re-united".  It's not even like D'Arcy Wretzky and James Iha are up to anything.  Billy must be a pill to work with.  He even took over James Iha's predilection for wearing dresses!  This must be too Single White Female for James.

The Pumpkins were never the band that had fans who danced in the aisles unlike some bands (as mentioned by the BF).  WTF, it's all melancholy and pensive lyrics with fucking awesome music.  The fans sat in 1996 Erwin Center, University of Texas at Austin.  A lot of the fans were sitting through some songs last night.  They crossed their arms and enjoyed the music and show with a frown in 1996 and 2008.  The world is a Vampire.  But that's also because WE'RE 12 years older now.  The dude sitting behind me yelled like crazy.  I had to wipe spit off my arm a few times as he called Billy a "little Bitch."  Apparently, a guy in the row in front of us SSHHed the guy next to me.  Come on, this isn't an evening with Yo Yo Ma.

Billy, you didn't even give us an encore.  I know you love to be loved and Adored.  But we clapped and shit for you.  AND YOU NEVER CAME BACK ON STAGE.  You suck for that.

NEVERTHELESS, the music is still awesome.  I sang every lyric I knew.  And these are the lyrics learned before the Internet.  I still have the copy of they lyrics to Siamese Dream that I sent a SASE to the fan club in 1994 to get.  I listened to that album every day in high school and college, then about once a week after that for about 2 years.  I still think Pisces Iscariot is superior the the pink Mellon Collie disc.  My freakin email in college has "Sandoz" which I took from Pisces.

Your Mayonaise last night was awesome.  Loved it along with the version in Vieuphoria.

Slumdog Millionaire

This is one of the best movies I've seen this year. There a tons I want to say but I don't want to give away anything. I watched it with my Homey and Nurse A. and chatted about how good it was from when it ended, to the parking garage, to home. You feel bad for the kids but they get by. It is already written.

Frieda Pinto - ok, so Homey says "Freida? Pinto? There's a billion people in India and they couldn't cast one of their own people?" Seriously!!! So that is why I googled her and found that she is Indian, and of course a model.

Kinetic

OK...so I went to the Kinetic Playground on Lawrence Friday. There was a Greatful Dead cover band gathering. The original drummer was actually up on the stage, playing. Wow, not dead. What a surprise. Good thing there was another girl I hung out with who wasn't sure about the music either. The highlight of the night was:

Other girl: Hey, do you need to go to the bathroom?
Sweetyellowcorn: No, why?
Other girl: Well good. One of the hippie girls just took a piss in the sink!

It was fun, nevertheless.

Ripped Off

BF and I were on the L to Roosevelt on Sat. We watched as three girls got taken by a 3-card-Monty guy. He carried wads of 20's tempting the girls to play the game. A minute later, 2 other guys showed up in our cart just sooo willing to play the game. The girls were probably in their early 20's, dressed to go out...and I knew they were young b/c what intelligent late 20-something would seriously wear flipflops (her heels were probably too uncomfortable to continue wearing on the L). That's what Uggs are for! The girls put together $25 to play and of course, LOSE!

BF was like, no, no they're not that stupid. Um honey, YES THEY ARE. I guess you have to learn from an experience like this. Wouldn't you rather get ripped off on a trip around Europe where it's cute and "part of the experience."

Smashing Pumpkins

Going to see 1/2 of the Smashing Pumpkins that I loved from 1992 until now with the BF.
I've been thinking about my favorite songs. This is what I have just off the top of my head:

Drown
Mayonaise
Rocket
Today
All of Pisces Iscariot

School Schmool

This past Monday and Tuesday were my restorative days. I tried to study and get work done but I ended up shopping and playing Dynomite!. Erin knows what I'm talking about. I just needed some days to do NOTHING. I'm pretty damn good at it.

Yesterday, I walked down to Clark and Diversey to get some popcorn - 1 small Chicago Mix, please, hand my $2.25, Thank you. at Chicago Popcorn Works and to possibly sneak in a movie at Century. I almost lost my shit in front of Borders. Chicago Popcorn Works...EMPTY!!!! I seriously almost got hit by a car trying to run and bang my fists on the door. Ok, don't be alarmed. It's not really gone. It's closed and moved a block down. THANK CHRIST!

The kid I took care of this weekend is a MAJOR DICK!  Scrotum and all.  He shushed me!  His kid is asleep but I had to check his vitals and write them on my paper.  Opening up my paper was apparently too loud.  SO the FUCKer shushed me!  I just glared at him.  DICK.

Orbitz Go Go Green 5K Run/Walk

We ran it this morning.  The misting and overcast sky didn't help that it was so cold outside!  We some how found our way to the front of the running pack.  You know someone is hard core when they've got light running shoes, wearing shorts, and ran home after the race.  We got our 9yr light bulb, a banana, and SPLIT!

Concept Analysis Paper

I'm working on this damn thing. So far, I've written an introduction, Palin-style. Makes no fucking sense.

Sexist

I know that $150,000 in clothes and make-up is ridiculous and excessive. But it's Neimans and Saks. What the hell was Palin supposed to do? Wear her suit from Kohl's? She has to step it up for the election. And as a woman, you get judged more based on looks.

I think they're picking on her b/c she's a woman. I can't stand Palin or what she represents for women. She embarrasses me as a woman. She's anti-woman's rights and she's really really stupid. She's McCain's shiny object that is being used to distract people from what is really important. Obama and McCain can spend $1500 on a suit. That's a lot of money. But they have the benefit of being able to wear the same suits over and over and no one can really tell. Also, do you really think she has time to go to the store and pick this shit out? No, it's the McCain-Palin campaign people.

As for the free trips for her kids, that's bad. You're not supposed to do that. Alaska's "First Dude" and the governor's salary should cover that. It's different when you're sharing the hotel room with Mom b/c that doesn't really cost anymore. But when you put your kids in a separate room and charge it on the tax-payers tab, that's stealing.

I can't wait for Election Day. For soooooo many reasons.

The weather was great. And it looks like you guys had lots of water support from the marathon org itself and the spectators.

And please also don’t tell me she is an “energy expert.” She is an energy expert exactly the same way the king of Saudi Arabia is an energy expert — by accident of residence. Palin happens to be governor of the Saudi Arabia of America — Alaska — and the only energy expertise she has is the same as the king of Saudi Arabia’s. It’s about how the windfall profits from the oil in their respective kingdoms should be divided between the oil companies and the people.

WOOLLOOMOOLOO

Harry's Cafe de Wheels has been serving up meat and chicken pies, pasties and hot dogs from a van at Cowper Wharf in Woolloomooloo -- a Sydney inner-city suburb -- for 70 years. Tourists are drawn here by word of mouth and travel guide blurbs, while Sydney businesspeople, taxi drivers and average Joes have long appreciated the waterfront icon for a good feed.

LOOK AT SWEEDEN

That strategy held banks responsible and turned the government into an owner. When distressed assets were sold, the profits flowed to taxpayers, and the government was able to recoup more money later by selling its shares in the companies as well.

"If I go into a bank," said Bo Lundgren, who was Sweden's deputy minister of finance at the time, "I'd rather get equity so that there is some upside for the taxpayer."

Sweden spent 4 percent of its gross domestic product, or 65 billion kronor, the equivalent of $11.7 billion at the time, or $18.3 billion in today's dollars, to rescue ailing banks. That is slightly less, proportionate to the national economy, than the $700 billion, or roughly 5 percent of gross domestic product, that the Bush administration estimates its own move will cost in the United States.

LOOK AT SWEEDEN DAMMIT!

Bob Herbert - I heart you

"We have trade missions back and forth," said Ms. Palin. "We do. It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

thoughts and more thoughts

Limp is gone.  Thighs still sore.  Everything A-OK.
I'm out at the tea shop studying for my first pathophysiology test.  Perfect time to process Sunday's experience.
I talked to a few friends and strangers about the race.
Sunday had the same extreme weather conditions as last year's Chicago Marathon.  Although, I will take the rain and 60 degrees over the water-less sauna of last October.
My running shorts stayed noticeably dry on the part of LSD heading toward Chicago.  After the turn on LSD toward the finish line (but not anywhere near it) I clearly remember when I said, "oh shit, I have water running down my legs.  Oh shit, that is from my ass!"
To match with my lack of training, I wore a cotton hat from my BF.  Ironically, it is stitched with "Life is Good."  ...ok, at least I was trying to be positive.  You could see water dripping from the hat bill, but no rain over my eyes!  See, cotton is fine..it's can't breath well, but who cares if it's pouring rain!
I made good but disgusting use of the rain coating my hands.  When I felt kinda parched, I would just wet my whistle with my hand. Forget the chapstick with sunblock.  There wasn't sun to block.

Another thing that made a difference was the song list in my head.
Superstar - Lupe Fiasco
I'm the Man Who Loves You - Wilco
Feel Good Inc - Gorrillaz
Lots of The Killers:
All these things that I've Done
Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf
Who Let You Go?
(Especially:  "Someone must have loved you
Not the way that I do...
You're missing what I'm trying to say
Ain't nothing getting in my way...)
The Ballad of Michael Valentine

Chicago Half Marathon

I finished it.
Slept about 3 hours last night. Just couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep.
No training - the most I ran was between 7 and 8 miles...which was 3 weeks ago.
Old shoes - I ran the Chicago Marathon in them last year
RAIN - it fucking rained the ENTIRE time! Miserable conditions.

But it's over. And I'm so glad I did it. 2:26.

FAT

Experts blame obesity, with about two-thirds of all Americans overweight. With fatty liver disease becoming more common in adults, many experts predict it will become the top cause of liver transplants by 2020.

His patient, Irving Shaffino, a 15-year-old Mexican-American who lives outside Lubbock, Texas, was lucky to get a transplant a year ago. He was in end-stage cirrhosis and, at 5-feet-4½, weighed 180 pounds.

Irving had been fat since age 6, thanks to a high-starch, high-fat diet of Mexican food, pizza and burgers, said his mother, Guadalupe Shaffino. At age 8, she said, he had a distended stomach and by his early teens, breathing problems kept him tethered to an oxygen tank at home.

Why don't you be a parent and not COOK the fucking "high-starch, high-fat" food?!! I do feel sorry for the kid. It's the parent's fault. Even if it's a socio-economic thing, go do something active. Start that shit early.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/health/sns-ap-med-fat-children-liver-disease,0,6175660.story

Then there's this shit...the SCFE ("sciffy") which stands for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis. Basically, part of the hip joint slips out of the acetabululum/ hip socket. It's common with obese children. I've heard of peds ortho surgeons do bilateral SCFE repairs - 1 is to fix the SCFE and the other to prevent an inevitable SCFE. Fuck, lose weight. You don't have to go to the hospital.

Hillary v Palin

How pissed do you think Hilary is about Sarah Palin?
Hillary is the feminist choice. She is smart and worked to get where she is.
And here comes Miss Teen Alaska...
Palin is a freakin tool of the Republican party.
Her voice just annoys me. I hate her hair.
OMFG, I'm so catty! Meow.

Season

I still can't believe the summer is officially over. The ivy growing on the building across the court yard is evidence enough that it's almost sock weather! Frack! I love the word frack.

School is in full swing. That's why I don't sleep well. I totally make time for the things I want to do, but I get in these mindsets and all I want to do is get shit done! I have to chill the frack out.

Maureen is right on

I can't stand Maureen Dowd because she can be so annoying with her broken record also known as her mouth.  However, I totally enjoyed her piece today, the last day of August.  They Republican's selection for VP is insulting to women.  She's nothing but a pretty face with an annoying voice.  She's probably a decent leader on a smaller scale...like a state or a company.  As the next President after McCain dies of old age?  Scary!  I want to dress as her for Halloween!

Widespread Panic

The funniest comment I heard about Widespread Panic: "..it's that band that all the old Austin Hippies get excited about."
It was my first "experience" ever.  BF thinks I'm going to rip into them.  Actually, I'm not.  Musically, they're GREAT.  But seriously, I turned to BF at the beginning and said, "Wow, this IS a really long song..."  (I kinda make fun of the whole Jam Band sound as a bunch of long ass tunes with no words...)  His response was "...actually, it's the second song...they just went right into it."  HA!

The crowd is unbelievable.  SERIOUSLY.  You have to see it to believe it.  Unless you're already on your 122th show and live it.

FYI, I took a picture as proof that I went and was up close.

Outside Lands Day 3

Toots and the Maytals!  Who can hate reggae?

And gosh darn it, I liked seeing the Drive By Truckers again. It was better seeing them here versus the Taste of Randolph in Chicago.

Outside Lands Day Day 2

So no pictures taken at the festival on day 2 which just means that I kinda suck.  We saw people I'd wouldn't necessarily seek out but should b/c they're iconic:  Steve Winwood & Tom Petty.  Saw Cake... but damn that stage Sutro at Lindley Meadow did NOT have good sound unless you were close to the stage.  People who went closer to see Cake said they were good.  Those of us who stood in the back next to the Churro's cart didn't get to hear as well.  BUT we got to eat some SPICY PIE!

I did manage to take some pictures of Garage A Trois at the Independent (http://www.theindependentsf.com/index.htm).

Outside Lands Day 1

"Where it's AT? I've got 2 turn tables and a microphone..."
Love Beck. Has it been almost a decade since I stood at the front row of the Austin Music Hall? Really wish I could have seen more. The sound wasn't fantastic because we were in the back.

BF and I got to see Manu Chau...who I would totally hit iTunes for some music. Loved the crowd. People watching here was WAY better that Chicago's Lollapolooza. There is definitely less skin at Outside Lands but that's b/c of weather. Lollapolooza = Frat Party. Outside Lands = standing inside a bong.

Food...very important to the Festival. While everyone was heading down to Radiohead at the Lands End Stage, BF and I went for food. The shortest line was to Alive. I saw people with this tasty looking wrap thing with nori (sushi paper). It looked good. I wanted it...so we waited in line. I didn't get it b/c it was filled with ground nuts and shit. Below is a link and items from the restaurant menu...I didn't see anything served at Outside Lands that are on the restaurant menu. Anyway, I am a vegetarian in recovery and THIS was too granola for me. God bless Northern Cal, San Fran etc, BUT COME ON!

So we got in line for oven fired flatbread: http://fulloflifefoods.com/. BF and I get the Tomato with 3 cheese. We WANT melty goodness.
This one lady in front of me who ripped into the the menu item: Flax Seed & Pistachio Pizza with Red Onions & Rosemary. The stand was basically trying to give these away. They cooked half the time as the flatbreads with cheese.

Hotel Tomo

Bonsai!

Freakin appropriate for a hotel in Japantown.
Anime theme!
Love the giant bean bag. It had a tag that says "Fatboy." (Regular-sized and fat girls can sit too)

A San Francisco Treat

I had a San Francisco treat this weekend that was NOT Rice-Aroni. And no cable cars. Just hung out for a few days for the Outside Lands Festival.
Took these from Lafayette Park. You can see the Bay and Alcatraz.
